Journey

At the close of each year I am reminded of my perspective six years ago when my full time freelance makeup artist / stylist career in Indianapolis started to develop and other transitional makeup gigs, including my 4.5 years of artist growing time with MAC Cosmetics, dissolved.
While with MAC Cosmetics, I was fortunate enough to have been sent on several big jobs(via my manager), but the most valuable one : a commercial shoot here in Indianapolis. I will always appreciate her (and the many other talented artists of MAC in that era, esp Karin G)  for turning me on to “the other side” and grooming me for nearly five years to have the confidence to do it.
I have had such wonderful opportunities! I have met and worked with a collection of photographers, makeup artists, hair and wardrobe stylists, production companies, ad agencies, personal clients, talent, real people, all people! Through these projects and people came occasions to travel a bit more. Whether going out of state or to a small town in the middle west, I see each day as a new experience. Meeting new people  is  a daily routine, one that I fully embrace and enjoy.
Each day and year has been a gift and 2011 is no exception. In addition to the many interesting and unique assignments in which I was a small part, I  returned to Miami to assist Lottie Stannard and her Make Up Forever team on Mercedez-Benz Fasion Week SWIM 2011. Better still, I was able to assist Lottie again in New York for NYFW S/S 2011. In my experiences with Lottie, I grow, I learn something, whether it is a new technique, something completely foreign to me, or a new approach to something in which I was already familiar. Not only am I enhanced by her level of craftsmenship, I am inspired by the group of artists she choses to be on her team. Assisting Lottie and working with her team is both intimidating and exhilarating! Watching her work is humbling, not only because of her artistic ability, but because she is very humble, as are many of the artists on her team. The last show I worked on while in NY was THUY. Everything about the show was perfection. The hair team was phenomenal, the stylists, the designer, and of course the makeup. This was also the first show during which I was able to stay backstage to watch the entire process transpire : makeup and hair done, models dresses, touch ups, models lining up, stylists dressing, the designer bowing to the audience after the show, etc.  It was that show, with that team, that moved me beyond words, to tears. I did not want to leave any of it!
Life and love will always lead me home to my most prized impressions. Their love, faith, and patience with me is the greatest reward and without them and my parent’s ongoing support, last minute bookings and ambiguous wrap times, could have turned into missed opportunities.
My objective is to evolve with each project, each interaction ; considering all feedback, making less decisions out of fear, if presented with  challenge, accept it as a moment to expand.
When we decide to do what we love and work hard to achieve it, it does not even feel like work; it feels like reward. I can only hope it all continues.
